LHASA, October 11 (CEIS) – Placer gold mining will be banned in Tibet starting from January 1, 2006, according to a public announcement issued on October 8 by the Tibet Autonomous Regional government.
The move aims to protect mineral resources and the fragile ecological environment of the Tibetan Plateau, the announcement says. It is part of the effort to build a harmonious and stable society and maintain a sustainable economic and social development.
All enterprises and individuals now engaged in placer gold mining are required to stop operation and complete the restoration of the mining areas before November 30, 2005 and withdraw all miners and mining equipment from the mining areas before December 31, 2005. Failing to do so within the prescribed time limit is liable to severe punishment, the announcement says. Enditem
